Apprenticeship Strategy Update – Pharmacy Assistants

In July we published a report detailing the findings of an in-depth multi-sector scoping exercise which analysed employer perceptions, experiences and barriers to apprenticeship training for pharmacy assistants, set in the context of current drivers for change and workforce challenges. This report was used as the basis for an informed options appraisal for a longer-term HEE strategy for supporting pharmacy assistant apprenticeships. The recommended option was agreed by the LaSE Pharmacy Workforce Group in September and has been shared with regional Chief Pharmacists and Local Pharmaceutical Committees at their recent network meetings.

HEE LaSE will support pharmacy employers to utilise the government Apprenticeship Levy (or co-investment model for small pharmacy employers) from April 2017 to cover all pharmacy assistant training costs. Beginning shortly, the dedicated project lead Laura McEwen-Smith will ensure that relevant communications reach pharmacy education and training leads, timed for the purpose of supporting pharmacy employers to prepare for this change in funding model and with a view to adopting this fully across the region by September 2017.

  • The scoping report highlighted some gaps in terms of readiness for the logistical, economical and infrastructural changes required to support apprenticeships and therefore HEE LaSE will be offering the following additional support to pharmacy employers, with a view to sharing any resulting sustainable best practice for the benefit of all stakeholders:
  • Develop and pilot suitable recruitment model/s for pharmacy assistants
  • Undertake effective workforce planning for pharmacy assistants
  • Design a quality educational infrastructure to support this trainee group
  • Invitation for expressions of interest to be part of these initiatives will be circulated as part of the communication schedule mentioned above.
