Kent and Medway Pharmacy Experience Exchange

Medway School of Pharmacy

Background

This project sees Medway School of Pharmacy (MSoP) and NHS partners unite to create opportunities for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to experience teaching, assessment and research in a structured 2-year programme to facilitate pharmacy career development. Experience exchange practitioners will be supported by MSoP academics, creating research opportunities and allowing MSoP undergraduate and postgraduates the chance to learn from and be inspired by leading-edge practitioners. We believe this will help Kent and Medway NHS organisations attract and retain good staff. It will also upskill staff to take on training and educational roles in the organisation, including the DPP role where appropriate.

Project Aims

Use learning from an existing Advanced Pharmacist Practitioner pilot that has been running at MSoP to develop a 2-year structured experience exchange programme to support Kent and Medway NHS pharmacy professionals in aspects of teaching, learning and assessment in year 1 and research skills in year 2.

Project Objectives

1

Pair Experience Exchange Practitioners with MSoP academics who will act as educational mentors in year 1 and with research mentors in year 2.

2

Develop supportive online materials in learning and teaching for year 1 and on research skills in year 2.

3

Offer opportunities for the Exchange Practitioners to undertake teaching and assessment at both undergraduate and postgraduate level based on their area of expertise in conjunction with MSoP module leads.

4

Develop research collaborations between exchange practitioners and MSoP to further pharmacy practice-based research.

Expected Outputs

Online supportive materials in teaching and research.

Engagement of 6-10 experience exchange practitioners across Kent and Medway in years 1 and 2.

Expert lead teaching sessions to be developed and delivered by the Exchange Practitioners.

Feedback provided to the Exchange Practitioners by the MSoP educational and research mentors as required for their stage of career development.

Research projects formed with the school run in conjunction with the Exchange Practitioner and the MSoP research mentor with appropriate outputs eg student theses, publications, poster or oral presentations at conferences.
