Understanding pharmacy workforce models across an integrated care system

South East London Integrated Care Board (SEL ICB)

Background

Opportunities for the pharmacy workforce have expanded, leading to an increase in demand for pharmacy staff in extended roles and movement of staff between sectors at all levels. Changes to how staff are trained and required to work, has led to gaps emerging between what is offered (for staff development, training and supervision) and what is required. Differences in expectations between employees and employers have always existed, however, the gap has widened adversely impacting on staff recruitment, retention and turnover leading to a deficit of suitably trained permanent and temporary pharmacy staff to fulfil pharmacy vacancies across the SEL ICS.

Project Aims

We aim to carry out a detailed analysis of existing training and supervision models across each sector and staff group so recommendations can be made on how current workforce models could be adapted to meet the needs of staff and services.

Project Objectives

1

Conduct a detailed analysis of existing training and supervision models across each sector and staff group to understand, evaluate and make recommendations on how models can be adapted to meet existing/emerging workforce gaps.

2

Produce a best practice ‘roadmap’ for early career development & supervision.

3

Review and standardise newly qualified and middle grade job descriptions across each type of role within each sector that uses agenda for change to identify warranted and unwarranted variation.

4

To understand what factors influence employment decisions for the staff groups described.

Expected Outputs

A report will be prepared which captures the programme outputs and makes recommendations which will inform the SEL ICS pharmacy workforce strategy.
